Richmond San-Rafael

San Francisco, USA

The seismic retrofit of the Richmond San Rafael Bridge included extensive demolition and bracing improvements in the substructure and superstructure for the elevated spans as well as a complete replacement of the approach tressel.  Lifts of 50 to 200 tons were standard procedure on this massive project, which at the time was the largest public works contract ever established in the State of California. Over 2 million rivets were removed and replaced with high strength bolts to fasten reinforcing steel. Elegant access solutions were developed to perform work in restrictive locations. Marine work, welding and bolting procedures, fabrication, erection, and civil works all needed to be coordinated, and all while traffic remained on the existing structure.  Rosewich co-founders provided oversight for critical operations in all aspects of the projects and contributed to its success.
