Canada’s largest bascule span bridge was constructed to replace the original span built in 1924. After fabrication was complete, the contractor enlisted Rosewich to provide modelling services based on the as-fabricated structure and to calculate the center of gravity for each shipping piece for the purposes of placing and designing lifting lugs for site erection. Rosewich also calculated the center of gravity and center of rotation for the entire erected structure for the purposes of specifying and placing the machinery to lift the bascule during the service life of the bridge. The permanent machinery was then incorporated directly into the model so that all elements of the bridge were accurately depicted and could be analyzed as required. Finally, Rosewich designed and detailed the complex grating structures for pedestrian access.
